Content Moderation Policy
LighChat Content Moderation Policy
Last updated: 2026-08-03 Version: 2 Applies to: all user content in the LighChat Service.
1. Principles
LighChat is a private communications service. We do not monitor private and group conversations, and where end-to-end encryption is enabled we cannot read them at all: we hold only ciphertext.
What we do act on:
- reports from users;
- lawful requests from competent authorities (see the Law Enforcement Guidelines);
- copyright notices under the DMCA / Copyright Policy;
- signals available to us without reading private content — for example, content in areas that are open to an unlimited audience, or media that matches known illegal-content hashes.
2. Prohibited content
Content prohibited by law or by our rules includes:
- child sexual abuse material (CSAM) — zero tolerance, immediate removal, account termination and a report to NCMEC under 18 U.S.C. § 2258A;
- terrorism and violent extremism;
- credible threats of violence, incitement to self-harm or suicide;
- illegal goods and services, including drugs and weapons;
- hate speech targeting protected characteristics;
- harassment, stalking, doxing, non-consensual intimate imagery;
- spam, fraud, phishing and malware;
- infringement of copyright, trademarks and other intellectual property.
The complete list is in the Acceptable Use Policy.
3. How to report
- the Report button on a message, profile or group;
- email abuse@lighchat.online;
- for copyright, follow the DMCA / Copyright Policy and write to dmca@lighchat.online.
Include a link or identifier for the content or account, the category of violation, and any context that helps us assess it. Reports may be submitted anonymously by email, though that may limit the feedback we can give you.
4. Review and response times
| Category | Target response |
|---|---|
| CSAM, credible threats to life, terrorism | Within 24 hours, around the clock |
| Any report submitted through the in-app Report button | Within 24 hours |
| Other reports sent by email | Within 7 calendar days |
| Copyright (DMCA) notices | Within 7 calendar days |
Possible outcomes: no action; warning; content removal; feature restrictions; temporary suspension; permanent termination; referral to law enforcement.
Decisions consider the severity and context of the content, whether the behaviour is repeated, and the risk of harm to others.
5. Notice and appeal
When we restrict content or an account we notify the user with the reason and the rule applied, unless notification is prohibited by law or would jeopardise an investigation or someone's safety (for example CSAM cases).
You may appeal within 6 months by emailing legal@lighchat.online with the subject "Appeal". Appeals are reviewed by a person who did not take the original decision, within 14 calendar days. If we were wrong, we restore the content or the account and record the correction.
For users in the European Union, this is our internal complaint-handling mechanism under the Digital Services Act; you also retain the right to bring the matter to an out-of-court dispute settlement body or to a court in your country.
6. Transparency
We publish an annual transparency report covering the number of reports received by category, actions taken, government and law-enforcement requests, and appeal outcomes. The first report covers calendar year 2026 and is published in the first quarter of 2027 at https://lighchat.online/legal/transparency.
